Chinatown Complex Food Centre - where stalls & stalls of food exist

In the streets of the famous Chinatown food centre, there lies many different stalls, all selling different kinds of food. The waffle was in a chinese cuisine food, ordering the pork chop noodles which was hand made (the noodles not the pork) was springy and light. The portion was quite big but of course waffle ordered something else for us to share (which he ended up eating most of it). The beef dish, which consisted of different parts of beef was really spicy, probably a sze chuan dish. The beef was quite tender but the spiceyness of it made it overpowered it.

The last dish was the famous koo kee yong tau fu mee. I absolutely love this springy mee as it is mixed with some condiments and the minced meat on top of it. I opted for an all tofu option instead of having a variety of it and despite having all tofu only, it was just light and very delicious! The queue for this stall is forever long, just like the other famous yong tau fu in the nearby hawker center.

Will be back here to try more food dishes in the near future! That's all for now!

Chinatown Smith Street Food Centre - where many wonderful food awaits us

This week, we headed to the central part of Singapore, landing at Chinatown food centre where its known for many famous food, and all I can say is yes there are really many good food here!!

As the waffle was not very hungry, I did not dare to order to much. After walking numerous rounds, I decided on the chicken rice stall. At first, I thought to just simply order a plate of chicken rice from any stall and just eat. However, I was pulled by an invisible force of attraction to Heng Ji Chicken Rice stall, which had a queue. I joined the queue and looked at the way the chicken was prepared. This stall only has white chicken and what makes this stall stands out is the price, which is very reasonable, and the auntie who takes our orders and collects the money from us. She is friendly and seems sincere in thanking each customerafter they ordered. For two person portion, there was quite a generous amount of chicken meat and two bowls of rice, a total of $6.60. Though it is not very cheap, with it being the cost of a normal plate of chicken rice, they were very generous with the portions. It was a really good meal of simple chicken rice.

The next item we wanted to try was the famous xiao long bao which was cheap and good. For only $5, you could 10 pieces of it. It was not hard to find the stall, with many people buying from it. I can't really remeber the name of the stall, but the number of the stall was 135. The xiao long bao was juicy and was quite nice, though it was a bit small. However, for the price we paid, it was quite worth it. After eating all of it, we decided to order the fried dumplings. This dish was not up to standard though. It was only one side crispy, while the other side was pale in colour and could taste a bit of flour. The meat filling was quite a big though thus was quite tasty but the skin spoiled it. Thumbs up for the xiao long bao but down for the fried dumplings.

You might also want to check out the fruit juice stall near the xiao long bao stall. It has a huge range of fruit juice that you can choose from and the price makes it even fantastic. I ordered beetroot with apple juice only for a mere $2, while freshly squeezed lime juice was only going for $1!! Simple amazing! Head down to this food centre soon..we are surely going back there!!

Alexandra Food Center

This is one hawker center that used to have many bbq seafood stalls. However, more stalls have given up, with the two famous ones remaining behind. The first dish was the mixed pork soup. There was a generous serving of the different kind of pork and the waffle loved it! There is the option of having rice to go with it. However, if you are not hungry, this soup option is the best.

The second dish was the seafood fried rice. So far, this is the best fried rice I have eaten in Singapore. There is actually not much seafood choices. However, they are quite generous with the amount of seafood they put into the rice with prawns and sotong/squid being the main seafood. There is also a substantial amount of chopped cabbage in the rice to ensure that there is some veg in it. I can't exactly remember the name of the shop, but if I remember correctly it is called Sock Lai or something like that. It is located in the middle aisle of the food center and they have a wide range of bbq seafood that also taste good!

To conclude, this is one food center you must try. Though there are not many stalls open at night, the range is good enough for you to have dinner there. There is also a bakery that sells similar bread to the famous barcook bakery. Perhaps you might want to try and compare to see which shop sells better buns. There is only one shop that sell buns there so you will not miss it!

PORN's Thai Food @ Junction 10

A visit to the new Junction 10 shopping centre located near Bukit Panjang was quite worth it, with many food choices at this new place. New food outlets that you have never heard of can be found here! It was already quite late when we ventured to this place as spaghetti was busy having a nice meeting. Waffle managed to get the car and off we went!

We came across this thai place as we walked around the first round, still deciding what to eat. However, as we were left with not much choices, we decided to give this place a try. Name of the shop sounds a little weird for an eatery, but nonetheless, lets talk about the food.

We both had a drink each, though the drink in red, rose tea, looked very bloody but turned out to be the nicer one of the two. The barley was not very nice, with a chemical taste/flavouring that spoilt the drink. As for food, we ordered a tom yam soup with glass noodles, pad thai and green curry. All in the name of being extremely greedy! The tom yam soup with noodles was good. Do not be deceived by the clear soup. It was hot and spicy, with a good feeling that comes with it. It taste better than the usual thai eateries that wefrequent. The pad thai came in a huge portion, and plenty of bean sprouts. Taste wise wasn't too bad also, with a delectable and richness in flavouring. Lastly, came the green curry. Personally, we found the curry slightly too sweet for our liking. It was generous with the meat (chicken) and gravy but we did not finished it at the end as it was just too sweet to be able to drink it!

Overall, this restaurant food is good and would be back to try other food in the menu! They have another branch at one of the lanes behind Bugis Junction. On another note, while at Junction 10, you might want to check out chickadees. This shop sells fried chicken wings coated with different flavourings. According to waffle, it taste even better if you take away, letting the coated flavouring powder sink into the chicken before eating. Give it a try!

No Signboard Seafood Restaurant @Vivocity

Although this would not be considered a hawker center, we ventured out to Vivo City on Tuesday, due to the heavy rain that prevented us from going to our hawker joints. The No Signboard Seafood Restaurant is located at the top floor at Vivo City, with quite a few branches around Singapore also.

We made sure we did not order too much food, our usual habit we have when eating. This establishment had quite a number of people despite being a weekday, showing the popularity of this place. The first dish was the vegetables, where we ordered the stir fried garlic dou miao or pea shoots. This light dish was nice, not too much garlic taste to give it away. The second dish was the black sauce hokkien mee, a popular favourite that is often eaten by us. Gravy was generous and the portion serving was just nice for two people, with each of us having two bowls of noodles each. The seafood on the noodles was fresh and I was glad that the taste did not overkill.

Lastly, the awaited chilli crab arrived. It was quite a huge crab for us. They were very generous with the gravy and we ate it with the 'man tou' that we ordered. The gravy was really spicy, and you can feel the heat going down your throat. The crab was fresh and meat was tender. The restaurant had already cracked the crab thus it was easy to peel off the shell. However, we realised that we could not each much of the gravy as it was quite starchy. If you want, you could actually takeaway the gravy as there was really quite a lot left, something that waffle wanted to do! On the hold, the side dishes were quite nice, but the main dish loses out to big established seafood chains that we have around Singapore.

Albert Court Food Center

We ventured out to the East this time, not knowing what to expect at Albert Court Food Center, located behind the famous Bugis Village.

Despite it looking gloomy from afar and not very well lit in the entire building, we soon came to realised that there were many rows of food. Not really knowing what to eat, we decided to queue for food that had a queue.

First came the Nasi Lemak. With its pungent rice, this stall attracted a long queue. The service is quite fast despite the long queue as the waffle got in line while the spaghetti analysed the queue. Probably one of the main reasons for the queue was also that the food was cheap, resulting in many workers buying one of the set to fill their stomachs.

There is a huge variety of dishes if you do not want the set meals, and they are very generous with their servings. The chicken wing was crispy while the hot dog, curry veg and potato was normal. However, one would not forget the chilli which is a must when eating nasi lemak.

Behind this stall is a stall which sells a huge variety of dishes which attracted many also and had a long queue. I could not decide whether to eat the hor fun or the black sauce hokkien noodles.

However, after waiting in the queue, I decided to go for the black sauce hokkien noodles. Portion wise it was just nice, though it was slightly dry. With a price of $3, it filled my stomach nicely and was too full to have any desserts.

There are many other food in this food center. It would be worth going back again.

Blk 163 Gangsa Road Coffee Shop

Waffle took a short walk from Bukit Panjang LRT Station and meet with Spaghetti for lunch at the kopitiam nearby. This kopitiam is famous for their Koka Mee or 可口面. They serve this dish in many flavors ranging from seafood to spicy tom yum in 2 sizes. Waffle had the seafood koka mee with double egg. It was laden with sumptuous amount of seafood ingredients. The noodles had a springy feeling with the right texture. It also doesn't have that mashed up texture of overcooked noodles.

Note that, this noodle stall closes at 2pm.

Next is the newly opened Malay Mixed Rice costing a paltry of $2.50, with a generous serving of rice. This is really suitable for big eaters. Spaghetti had this malay rice. It looked rather undercooked but was rather delicious. There was a huge serving of vegetables given though the potato was really really small.

Lastly, it was the Iced Lemon Tea which is a 'must have' drink to have on a hot day. A slice of fresh lemon sitting at the bottom of the ice-filled plastic glass, gives the tea a tangy taste. With this iced lemon tea, you wouldn't want to drink any other drinks when you are at this kopitiam!

ABC Market and Food Center

Visit to this food center has been a good experience. So far, the food in this place exceeded our expectation, having read about many good food found in this newly renovated food center. I would think that if you happen to see a queue at the store, the food would have to be quite good.

First up was the hokkien mee. Despite being 4th in queue, the wait for the noodles took between 15 minutes as the uncle fried up a wok full of noodles. Ingredients are fresh and there is no pork in it. There were many pieces of sotong given and what makes it different is the chilli. This dish's chilli is some what different from many other stall, making it unique. The queue was really long upon collection of food. With a starting price of $3.50, the amount was not a lot. Would suggest ordering $4 if you would like just one dish to keep you full.

After a long wait for the hokkien mee, the satay bee hoon queue was nothing comparable. The quantity given was huge and plenty of gravy filled up this dish. It is spicy and has a strong peanut taste and a non nut eater would find that this dish is good!

Lastly, we ordered a bowl of mixed balls, with the stall being famou for their fishballs. For $4, you can have a mixture of fish balls and meat balls. The meat balls are unusual, not the typical one where the entire ball is filled with so called meat. It is filled with half fish, half meat kind of balls, making it light and springy. It was a good light dish to end the meal.

We would definitely head back to this food center again to try the other dishes that had really long queues. For now, I would say this has been a fulfilling trip down!

Resort World Sentosa - Malaysian Food Corner

This time round we head to Resort World area in Sentosa where hawker food exist..to be more specific, Malaysian hawker food. In an area built for different hawker food, the selection is just nice, not too many though price is another thing.

The longest queue in the whole 'food court' was the hokkien mee, a different version from the more common one Singaporeans eat. It is the dark sauce kind where can be found at some tze char stalls. Taste wise wasn't too bad though I think there would be nicer ones elsewhere. There were not much ingredients also and at a cost of $6!

If you like the fatty kind of char siew in your wanton mee, this is the right place to come! For a price of $4, you get quite a bit of char siew and the noodles is not too bad, though again nothing fantastic. However, the serving portion is quite generous for the noodles, char siew and won ton.

To end it off, dessert!! The dessert store sold only a few kinds of desserts, ice kachang being one of them. The ingredients in the dessert were plenty though the atapchi was slightly hard.

On the hold, price wise, you might think you are paying loads for such simple food. However, the ambience is different, area is different and you may realised that the crowd is also slightly different with more tourists and visitors to Sentosa. For cheaper alternative, this place might be worth a try, but don't expect the food to be the most delicious one you ever had!

XO + Bee Hoon = XO Bee Hoon

I think not having expectations when you do/try something new is best..this would apply to the entry today where we got to eat the XO fish bee hoon, located along Buona Vista road.. this famous store was originally from Holland V and have now moved to a coffee shop along Buona Vista where business does not seemed to be as good as before..

There were two different views for this bowl of fish soup as two people went to try it out..one, had this recently during lunch time, felt that the standard was not as good as the one during lunch, lacking in the XO, while the other, not having had this for a really long time, felt that the soup was rich and thick, with a good amount of XO included into it..I guess its up to individual perspective on whether you like your fish soup having a really strong taste of XO or a mild one..for us, there was a mixed feeling going into this..

As for the crispy chicken, taste wise it wasn't too bad, however, it was really oily!! I guess the focus for this store is the fish..

Uncle Leong Seafood - Seafood Fiesta

Today we ventured out to an area furthest north of Singapore, Punggol! To be exact it was at the LRT Riveria station where the Punggol promenade was found..taking the MRT purple line all the way to the last stop was a torture and upon alighting you would still have to take the LRT to your destination if not all you would see is construction going on.

Upon arrival at Riveria station, Popeye's eatery caught our eyes. We were actually looking out for Uncle Leong's seafood, which was actually near it. Our stroll at the promenade ended with a heavy downpour halfway and thus needing to take shelther and running to the restaurant when the rain was lighter. When we reach the restaurant, there was already a slight queue despite it being only 6 plus at night. The wind was brewing and we were really drenched. We got a table pretty quickly and headed to order a range of food, ensuring that it would not be too much.

First up was the salted fish fried rice. This time round there was no bean sprouts in it and probably due to our hunger, it was quite tasteful and the portion was really good. A small portion would be sufficient for two to share. Up next was the salted egg prawns..despite one of us not being a fan of salted egg, this dish was good! There were 8 prawns altogether and the flavour and taste was not too thick, giving it a nice touch to the food. We also ordered a seafood soup to keep us warm from the cold weather. The soup was slightly salty but generous with the different seafood in it. It was also a big bowl. Last but not least was the crab that we all have been waiting for. The meat was good, fresh and chunky. As for the taste, when we first tasted the gravy, I in particular thought it wasn't too bad, having a nice buttery taste. However, upon more servings of it, I realised what the problem was. In order to save cost (I presume), condensed milk was used as the main ingredient as a substitution to pure butter, thus one would not be able to eat too much of the gravy as you will get too sick of it after a while. That was a disappointment. On the overall, price was quite reasonable and the day ended well!

Amoy Street Food Centre - Right in the middle of CBD area

Our food hunt continues to Amoy Street Food Centre which is just a mere 2 minutes walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station. This huge hawker centre caters to the working professionals in the area, thus at night, not many stalls are opened. However, with the limited range at night, it provides a satisfied range of food. There are many Indian Muslim stalls there, attracting a crowd of people. We decided to try the beef noodles, which had quite a few reviews. The generous serving of noodles and beef made the bowl of noodles filling and appetizing. The second bowl of noodles was in the form of mee tai mak! This bowl of fishball noodles was tasty and had 3 sizes options. The small bowl was more than sufficient for a meal. You can opt for the usual kind of noodles if you do not like the thick short noodles that should be eaten with a spoon!

Upon departing the place, we realised that there is a 2nd floor also! Will definitely head back another time to head to the 2nd floor. For now, would recommend that one should head down during lunch instead. There would be even more food options to choose from!

Adam Road Food Center - Wide range of food choices

We embark to Adam Road Food Center today, set in the heart of Farrer Road and Bukit Timah Road. There was a quite a big crowd of people on this weekdy night. The nearest MRT station would be the new Botanic Gardens station while there are many buses that goes to this place.

The original intention of trying the famous Nasi Lemak for dinner came to naught as the both stalls that sold Nasi Lemak were closed. Do they close on Wednesdays? Anyway despite that, there seemed to be plenty of other choices there, especially a wide range of Indian food available. This time round, we tried out the bee hoon goreng. There were many stores to choose from, and thus going to the store that has the most customers? One thing about buying mee/bee hoon going is that the store person would always presume that the customer would want an egg on top of their noodles and later charging the extra 50 cents for the egg. The bee hoon goreng wasn't too bad, tasty and appetizing but as usual adding lots of bean sprouts!

The second dish was the mutton soup, bought from the store which only specializes in mutton soup, the different parts of the soup available. The soup was rich in taste and spicy, one of a kind if you enjoy drinking soup. After posting about prawn mee for the last few entries, we succumbed to the big prawn mee again! There was a short queue for this store and the soup ws thick and rich in the stock. Lovely! Quite a few prawns were also given, making it worthy for the price that you pay.

Lastly was the ice kachang! What was the original intention of ordering a drink ended up with a dessert. This ice kachang store had a long queue, with the store uncle ensuring that each ice kachang was made to perfection, with adequate amount of ingredients. You would not miss this store since there is only one with a long long queue!

Try out the food at this food center and you will be spoilt for the wide range of choices of food available!

Old Airport Road Food Center - Big Prawn Mee

Travel to the far east of Singapore and you would be able to find a very decent bowl of BIG prawn noodles..as you can see from the picture, this prawn mee can be found at Old Airport Road Food Center which is a very short walk from Dakota MRT station..despite arriving early around 5 plus in the afternoon, there was already a queue for this prawn noodles..they are very generous in the prawns, giving 4 slices of big prawns and plenty of soup!

Verdict?? This is definitely a must try!! Whether you like it dry or soup, this journey to the east is a MUST!!

How would you like the moo (steak) done ?

My cousin sent me this picture years ago. Not too sure where did he extract it from, but thought it will be a good share. So, how would you like your moo done ?

Seah Imm Food Center - Battle of the Meeeee

Our next destination was to Seah Imm Food Center, which is opposite Vivocity and just above Harbourfront MRT station. Our journey continues from the disappointment of not not knowing what has happened to Zion Riverside Food Center..also, today we had our guest SJ with us! There was some excitement going to this food center as we heard some good reviews about the food.

Upon reaching, many stores were closed. However, there were about 3 to 4 hokkien mee stores that were available and you could say that we were spoilt for choice! We decided to order from 2 different stores to compare, with the addition of rojak and oyster omelette..results??

The both plates of hokkiem mee were truly not up to standard of any hokkien mee that we have tried..one tasted so much of chicken stock, it's as if the auntie frying it wanted to close shop early and poured all the remaining stock into the noodles, resulting in us eating chicken stock mee..can't complain much with it being only $2..the other plate was slightly better, though the noodles was slightly hard, suggesting the uncle did not cook long enough..prawns given were not fresh also..i guess it's a never going back to this place to eat hokkien mee ever again..

The rojak was another one that was badly done..fruits were taken out from the fridge and the you tiao was taken from somewhere? after mixing all the ingredients, the uncle took out 3 miserable toothpick and gave the plate to us..i think the ideal food for the day was the oyster omelette with sufficient egg to go around though the chili looks really bloody don't you think?

Zion Riverside Food Centre..What happened??

This entry is supposed to be on location at Zion Riverside Food Centre, with the range of prawn mee, carrot cake, and tao huay waiting for us..however to our dismay, the place was close!!

Before crossing the road to the hawker centre, the entire area was already dark, indicating that no stores were under operation. It was a disappointing trip, making our way there only to find that it is not opened.

The question now is, what happened to the food centre?? We did not cross over to find out as the shuttle bus came, resulting in us heading somewhere else to eat. However, we will find out in the next couple of days what has happened to it and update it here. In the mean time, anyone knows whether the food centre has closed down or under going renovation?

LATEST UPDATE:::
Zion Riverside Food Center is now open for operation after their renovation.

Hong Kong Street Chun Kee (Bukit Merah) 香港街珍記

The initial thought was that we were heading to the food centre at Alexandra. However, this meal which consisted of lots and lots of bean sprouts is at the coffee shop opposite of Alexandra Hospital, which can be viewed from the main road if you are passing by.

This Tze Char store has a wide variety of food but one of the speciality dish is the San Lao Hor Fun which is hor fun based with fish and bean sprouts. If you are a lover of bean sprouts this dish is definitely for you! The hor fun noodles would make it you feel full, together with a light fish and veg to complete the meal.

The second dish is a recommended dish by the auntie, which after ordering, we realised that our entire dinner, which has only two dishes both consisted of fish! The mango bits and floss added to the crispy fish was quite refreshing!

This coffee shop is hardly crowded and you will definitely not miss it if you are traveling along Alexandra Road so give it atry when you are heading along that way! This store is located at Blk 125 Bukit Merah Lane 1 #01-190.

Mei Ling Food Centre

Today we embark on our start of our affair to Mei Ling Food Centre, located at the hearts of Queenstown and a short distance away from Queenstown MRT station.

Main aim of this visit: To revisit the famous Shanghai dumpling that was previously from Commonwealth Ave Food Centre.

Short Review: Before the main course, there was of course appetizer, which was the rojak from the store beside it. Dumpling was still exceptionally good though the portion has shrunk, now being 8 pieces for $4 instead of 10. Wish I could have more!! Together with the Beijing noodles and the hot & spicy soup (which can churn your stomach), this meal was more than enough for the day!

After dinner, take a stroll along the hilly side of the area. Of course, don't get lost and end up in the midst of Queenstown. Find the MRT track and you will never be lost!
